Is It Possible to Reverse Gum Disease?

What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an early form of gum disease and is characterized by swollen gums that may bleed when you brush or floss. It is caused by bacteria building up along the gum line as these bacteria produce toxins that gradually inflame and infect the gums. At this stage, gum disease is quite easy to treat and is completely reversible. However some of the symptoms of gingivitis are quite easy to ignore, and gingivitis is also sometimes called a silent disease. If you notice any symptoms such as bleeding or swollen gums, or perhaps an unpleasant taste or bad breath then you should contact a periodontist as soon as possible.

How Is Gingivitis Diagnosed and Treated?

A periodontist will gently examine your teeth and gums and may carry out the various diagnostic tests to evaluate the extent of the bacterial infection. These tests may include digital dental x-rays that show how far the disease has progressed and whether it has affected the bone surrounding your teeth, and he may gently probe your gums using a special instrument.

Probing is done to determine the depth of any pockets that may have formed in between your teeth and gums. These pockets, called periodontal pockets develop as a result of the gums pulling away from the teeth. In a healthy mouth, the depth of any pockets is between 1 mm and 3 mm, but where there are signs of gum disease, these pockets can be far deeper and larger.

After your examination, suitable treatments can be recommended. Often the early stages of gum disease can be simply treated with a professional dental cleaning or with scaling and root planing. This helps remove infection from any gum pockets, enabling the gums to heal more easily. It's important that any treatment is backed up with good oral care at home as unless you thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, the problem will recur and worsen.

What about Reversing Periodontitis?

Periodontitis or advanced gum disease cannot generally be reversed as the condition is often chronic. Treatment will focus on removing as much of the bacterial infection is possible and is likely to be ongoing to get the disease under control. It may be necessary to use a combination of non surgical and surgical treatments to help restore gum health. Non surgical treatments such as scaling and root planing can be useful in getting rid of quite a bit of the infection, but sometimes surgical treatment such as flap surgery is necessary to obtain greater access into deeper periodontal pockets.

Periodontal disease can also cause quite substantial destruction, affecting the gum tissue and the bone surrounding teeth. In this case these tissues can sometimes be repaired or regenerated through the use of sophisticated grafting techniques.

Get Your Smile Back With Dental Crowns and Bridges

First things first, what are dental crowns and bridges? Crowns are tooth shaped caps that are placed over damaged teeth. On the other hand, bridges are act as a replacement for missing teeth. These two procedures are known as the most important procedures where missing or damaged teeth are the issue.

A great majority of people are battling with low self esteem which might be caused in part by missing or fractured teeth. As we all know, our teeth play a very important part in our facial appearance. Truth be told, when you have two or more teeth that are missing or fractured, you might lose your desire to smile as well. Therefore, to ensure that you get that smile back and your esteem up, consult your dentist as soon as you have an issue with your teeth.

A crown essentially caps a fractured or broken tooth. It is a procedure that perfectly restores the tooth's original shape and size. You can also use crowns to cover teeth that are poorly shaped and/or teeth that are discolored. In addition to this, a crown shields a tooth filling and helps keep it in place.

However, if you lose your teeth because of tooth decay or injury, a bridge will be used to fill the gap. The best part about bridges is that they can fill the gap of one or more teeth. The bridge also mimics your original tooth (or teeth). This is to mean that at the end of the procedure, the bridges will look exactly like your original teeth.

Therefore, to restore your esteem, pride and smile, your dentist will either use crowns or bridges to replace missing or broken teeth. Both of these dental approaches are the solution to serious dental problems. Crowns and bridges are long lasting solutions for anyone who is looking for reliable and permanent dental solutions. Additionally, these two procedures contribute to overall oral health by maintaining the alignment of the teeth.

Why Do I need Dental Crowns and Bridges?

  • Dental crowns and bridges are procedures that were developed to help restore people's beauty by either replacing badly damaged or missing teeth. Other than replacing these teeth, the two procedures are also used to give individuals durable, long lasting and functional teeth.

  • Since we are all faced by elements that weaken our teeth, a great majority of people are prone to tooth loss through decay. Luckily, crowns are used to protect and strengthen teeth. Bridges on the other hand are designed to ensure that the teeth around the missing tooth are firm and strong.

  • Dental crowns and bridges are used to improve the teeth function. This is to say that apart from regaining your confidence, you will be able to chew your food and speak more easily as well.

Bottom-line is, dental crowns and bridges are the solution for replacement of teeth for a more natural looking and beautiful smile.

Dental Health Issues That You Need To Take Care Of Right Away

Many people are content to simply brush and floss their teeth without regularly scheduling comprehensive oral exams. Unfortunately, failing to have your teeth checked by a licensed professional at least once or twice per year can result in serious issues. If you haven't been diligent in scheduling preventative dental exams, there are a few signs and symptoms that could indicate that you need treatment or intervention right away.

Gums that are red, swollen, sore and inflamed often indicate the presence of gingivitis or more advanced periodontal disease. Your gum tissues should be both healthy and resilient. If they bleed when you brush your teeth, you need to schedule an appointment immediately. When the health of the gums is low, the natural tooth structures are at great risk.

When gum infections are allowed to spiral out of control, this can lead to tooth loss, infection of the underlying bone structure and even systemic infection. This is why people with gum diseases are more susceptible to cardiovascular and whole-body problems. Once harmful bacteria escape the confines of the mouth and are allowed to enter the bloodstream, they can wreak havoc in many areas.

Some people have teeth that are hypersensitive and that may even feel a bit loose. This could be a sign of infection, particularly if your gums are irritated as well. If the underlying problems are not resolved, the hypersensitivity will only increase and the natural tooth structures will continue to be come looser until loss occurs.

Chronically bad breath is another symptom that should be checked out by a dental health professional. It usually means that there is an active colony of bacteria nearby. Simply having plaque and tartar deposits cleared away will likely resolve the problem for good. This way, you won't have to continue masking unpleasant odors with gum, costly mouthwash solutions or mints.

Teeth that are cracking, chipped, fractured or otherwise weak should be inspected by a licensed dentists. Your provider can let your know whether or not these problems are the result of a nutritional deficiency. He or she can also use veneers or crowns to prevent further tooth damage.

It is important to take note if your tongue is perpetually coated. This is often the case for people with chronic halitosis. Harmful bacteria can hide on the surface of the tongue and flourish here. This can also indicate that the natural pH of the mouth interior has been disrupted and needs to be corrected. Whenever there is a proliferation of potentially dangerous organisms in the mouth, the likelihood of tooth decay is heightened.

People should also be cognizant of how past dental work is performing. Certain cosmetic and structural corrections can begin to break down over time and may need to be replaced. Thus, if you have dental implants or have had root canal therapy performed in the past, you definitely want to schedule regular office visits with a trusted local provider. This is the best way to ensure that small issues are effectively identified and resolved, before these problems start to spiral out of control.

Six Tips for Finding the Perfect Dentist

Many people take great pride in their teeth and smile, so it is important to find a good dentist. With these tips, it will be easy to find the perfect professional to fit your needs.

Do Your Research

It is really easy to find websites that have thorough reviews on medical-related practices, such as doctors and dentists. It is best not to rely solely on strangers' reviews, but it can provide a good starting point, especially if any reviews are overwhelmingly bad. This is also a good way to check office locations and find the one that is closest to home.

Check the State Dental Board

If a person is truly concerned about their future doctor, it is possible to check each state's dental board for important information. Most states have a website listing certified and accredited dentists. This is a good way to make sure you particular professional is reputable, in addition to seeing if there are any negative claims against him or her.

Ask Friends and Relatives for Referrals

It is always a good idea to ask trusted friends and family for their referrals. It is especially helpful if a pattern is noticed and a particular dentist's name comes up again and again-this is likely a good sign! Asking friends who are especially picky also means they will hold their doctor to high standards.

Schedule a Consultation Only

Many people may not be aware that it is possible to schedule consultations rather than an initial check-up or cleaning. A consultation can be thought of as an interview with the dentist. At this visit, it is important to take note of the office, staff, and how the doctor communicates. It is also wise to address any concerns or special needs you may have during this time. Doing a consultation with two or three dentists should provide enough information to make the right choice.

Check Insurance Policies

Dental insurance is definitely something not everyone has, despite the fact that dental work can be expensive. If one is lucky enough to have insurance, it is smart to check the various insurance companies and payment plans accepted by a practice ahead of time. The last thing anyone wants is to show up for an appointment only to have coverage denied.

Pay Attention to the Office Environment

It may seem obvious, but first appearances can be quite telling. When visiting for the first time, take notice of the office environment. Is everything clean and orderly? Is the staff polite and courteous? What about the other patients-do they appear anxious? A well-maintained office can indicate a doctor who pays attention to details. These aspects may reveal signs of what is to come.
