How Do You Find a Dentist You Can Trust?

Most of us have been in the middle of a dental appointment that we couldn't wait to get out of. It is often difficult to find just the right dentist, one that runs on time, is gentle but thorough, takes the time to explain your options, does quality work, is trustworthy, makes you feel comfortable in the chair, and cares about your concerns. Sometimes we go through several dentists before we find the one that really fits. What are some things you can do to find the right dentist?

As a first step, go to maps.Google.com and search for dentists near your home or office. Click on the practice's website to read more about the dentist and practice. What are some things you should look for?

  1. How long the dentist has been in practice.
  2. What continuing education courses they have completed since dental school.
  3. What procedures they offer and how much experience they have with those procedures.
  4. Before and after pictures of their work.
  5. Check for testimonials. You might also find recommendations on sites such as Google, dex or yellowpages online, yahoo, yelp and others.

The best way to find out if you are going to like a certain office is to try them out. Once you've narrowed it down to two or three, call the office to see if they offer a free consultation. This is great opportunity to be a secret spy. Pay attention to the friendliness of the receptionist, the ease of making the appointment, the waiting time in the reception area, the atmosphere of the office, the cleanliness of the operatory, the professionalism of the staff, etc.

During the consultation interview the dentist. If you are interested in a certain procedure ask them how many they have performed, if any of the restorations have failed, what materials they use and why, and if there is a warranty on their work.

Get a feel for if the dentist is truly interested in your health by the questions they ask and the time spent. Did they offer more than one treatment option? If a dentist performs a thorough consultation, they will probably also be thorough with the dental work.

You should find out how much the procedure would cost, but keep in mind that you usually get what you pay for. Not all dental materials are the same so make sure you are comparing apples to apples.
Ask the staff how they feel about working for the doctor. A lot of times you can determine if the dentist is honest, by the way the staff members talk about him or her.

It is extremely important that you find a dentist that you trust. It can be expensive and usually difficult to redo dental work that you are not happy with. Do yourself a favor and do a little research up front. It could save you a lot of time and headache down the road.
